There was something awesome in the thought of the solitary mortal standing by the open window and summoning in from the gloom outside the spirits of the nether world. - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle |

There are many different types of spirit communication. They can range from EVPs to dowsing rods to Mediums and everything in between. The fascination about communication with the dead and the dead communicating with the living has intrigued us for centuries.
Channeling is a form of communication in which a person allows themselves to be taken over partially or in whole by an angel, guide, spirit or ghost to receive messages or information while in a trance or in a dissociated state of consciousness. There are several types of channeling that can be used:
The receiving of voices of the dead that have been recorded either on audio tape, a digital recorder or on video tape without a physical source. Even though this type of communication is very controversial it is one of the best ways to make contact in a non-threatening way. While using EVP during a investigation you might be able to interact with the entity and be able to gather more information about who the entity is.

The boards have been around since at least 1891, it comes from the French word "oui" and the German word "ja", both meaning "yes." A device consisting of a small board, or planchette, on legs that rest on a larger board marked with "yes", "no", "hello", "good-bye", letters of the alphabet and the numbers 0-9. Participants place their fingers on the planchette then ask a question. The planchette then is supposed to move over the board, it will rest briefly on individual letters to spell out words to the answer questions or deliver messages. This type of communication should not be used. When using this type of communication you don't know who you are communication with and at times the entity that you've made contact with may not leave the location after the session is completed.
A Séance is a meeting of people trying to obtain messages from the spirits of dead people. This was a very popular form of communication during the rise of spiritualism in the late 1800's and early 1900's and it is still used to this day. This was normally held in the home of either the medium or the sitter (the person who wanted to make contacted with the spirit world) but it can be held anywhere were more than two other people involved. Normally this was done is a special room where the room had very little lighting and where people were seated around a table.
In the early days there was some drama involved with this process, a medium would go into a trance and begin to move and sway from side to side. The sitters would often recognized the arrival of a spirit by a rush of cool or cold air which was followed by either a loud rapping sounds on the table or strange lights floating in the room. Depending on the Medium's process they would either begin automatic writing or announcing a spirit presence in the room.
Modern séances are less formal, the trances not necessarily so dramatic and the sound of horns are rare, but the practice continues. In fact many of those "dramatic" events were later debunked as fraud. Most Mediums today will not say they are conducting a séances because of the fraudulently stigmatism but in essence they are.
